The Estimate

After setting up a time to talk to some electrical contractors, there are some things you should know about the estimate process.

  • Talk to at least two different contractors and get an estimate from each one to compare.
  • The estimate should include how long it will take the contractor to do the work, not just a dollar figure.
  • If there is a large price difference between estimates, it could be due to differences in quality of materials or the hourly wages of workers.
  • An estimate should be easy to understand – if something is on the estimate, you should know what it is and why it is there.
  • It is customary for a contractor to require you to pay in advance for a large item that is likely nonrefundable or that is custom made for you.
  • Expect your contractor to require you to pay some portion of your invoice up front as a deposit - the amount required should be on your initial estimate.
    • For large or long jobs, your contractor may also request draws at certain points, or may want to set up a payment schedule with you.
    • Under no circumstances should a contractor expect you to pay 100% of the cost before the job is started!
